Food for Thought Week 9: Basil

This week, the St. Louis heat continues to bear down, but the basil is thriving so it seems appropriate to discuss this herb.

Best known for its many culinary uses, basil is gaining notoriety as a medicinal herb.  Recent studies suggest that it may contain special antioxidants within its oil that can help make the blood less likely to form harmful clots, that may be able to fight off bacteria and viruses, and may even have a role in future treatments for cancer.

Whether it's with a tomato caprese salad, pho, or pesto, enjoy your basil and remember it may be helping you too!
